What is the purpose of this study?

There have been multiple studies on individual characteristics and operations on owner managers. However, there are knowledge gaps related to the challenges these entrepreneurs encounter when entering and building their ventures and the best practices for providing realistic solutions for these issues/challenges. This proposed project will address these gaps using an organizational framework, which addresses drivers for adoption of the corporate strategies and strategy implementation process.

What will I do if I choose to be in this study?

If you choose to participate in this study, you will be guided to an online survey site. A small portion of participants will be selected for a focus group discussion. There are three main sections for you to share your current practice: (1) drivers for strategizing for business performance; (2) systems/processes for strategic implementation; and (3) information about your business and your personal background. At the completion of the study, you are welcome to request the findings of the study. Participation or non-participation will not affect your membership standing.

How long will I be in the study?

The online survey will take approximately 15-20 minutes. Focus group sessions will last approximately 2 hours.

What are the possible risks or discomforts?

Participation in the study involves minimal risk since you will merely be asked to complete a survey on paper or online. Your personally identifiable information will not be collected. Breach of confidentiality is a potential risk, but safeguards are in place to prevent it. Overall, the risk involved in participating in the study is no greater than everyday activities.

Are there any potential benefits?

Participation in the study provides no direct benefits to the participant but your input is valuable to the learning of drivers for business performance and future design of effective training programs for owner managers.

At the end of the study, the research team will conduct a random drawing with subject numbers and determine the winners. The business office will request for the mailing addresses and forward one winner with $500, one winner with $250, two winners with $100, 10 with $50, and 50 with $20 gift cards. All of your personal identifiable information will be masked and your confidentiality will be strictly enforced.

Will information about me and my participation be kept confidential?

No personally identifiable information will be gathered in the survey. If you are one of the lotto prize winners, the business office will contact you directly to request for your mailing address for forwarding you the gift card. All Information Sheets will be maintained in a locked cabinet and the data will be stored on a password protected computer in the principal investigator’s office for the three year period post-study termination and then properly disposed of after that time. All audio tapes will be kept strictly confidential together with other information sheets in order to protect the participant’s identity. The data will not be used for other purposes in the future. Only researchers will have access to the data using a secret password. However, the project's research records may be reviewed by the National Association of Veteran-Serving Organizations and by departments at Purdue University responsible for regulatory and research oversight.

What are my rights if I take part in this study?

Your participation in this study is voluntary.  You may choose not to participate or, if you agree to participate, you can withdraw your participation at any time without penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled.
